Appearance

Sonsation – A mid-season June-bearing variety producing firm and delicious strawberries. If there were such a thing as a perfect strawberry, Sonsation would certainly be a strong contender for the title. Its brilliant shine and ease of picking make it a favourite among growers.

Flowering and harvesting period

Sonsation is a mid-season variety, ripening slightly later than Elsanta. It delivers high yields with an excellent percentage of Class 1 fruit.

Fruit quality

The fruits of Sonsation are bright red and glossy, maintaining their shine even after storage. They are visually attractive with a fresh green calyx and have a conical shape.

The flesh is firm yet juicy, offering an excellent sweet-acid balance. The first berries may occasionally appear slightly grooved.

Productivity

Sonsation is an easy-growing variety with strong root development, resulting in a compact plant with upright foliage. Side crowns develop readily. The flower trusses are well protected against spring frost. The flowers produce high-quality pollen, which explains the variety’s excellent fruit set. The trusses can be stripped faster than those of Sonata. From flowering onwards, the plant has a higher need for potassium. The berries are clearly visible, making them easy to pick. Sonsation also requires additional magnesium in the fertilisation programme.

Pest and disease susceptibility

Sonsation shows good tolerance to Phytophthora cactorum and performs well against powdery mildew under favourable growing conditions. Due to the risk of Mucor, plants should not be planted too densely.
